Community living

Community living provides the perfect opportunity for our residents to stay active and social. Our residents and staff work together to develop programs and events that are both stimulating and entertaining – participation and enjoyment are always at the centre of our activities.

Some of our village community programs and activities include:

  • Activities such as craft and music sessions and group games such as bingo and cooking for our diversional therapy clients. These are usually held on site but occasionally the Village mini bus is used for special outings in the local area
  • Weekly Finnish movie clubs
  • Participation in residents’ meetings
  • High tea parties
  • Baking sessions
  • Outings on the village bus for weekly shopping trips and group day trips
  • Regular visits from Finnish speaking Pastors from Lutheran and Pentecostal Churches. Church services for several denominations are held on a regular basis in the village
  • Special occasion celebrations e.g. significant birthdays, Finnish Independence Day, mid-summer celebrations
  • Weekly village sing-a-longs
  • Outdoor activities
  • “Aarre Aitta” (Treasure Barn) where residents can purchase pre-loved clothing, shoes, bags and jewelry
  • Personal training sessions in the gym, water exercises (in summer), and group walks
  • Along with many more activities.

Another important part of daily village life is routine. Here is an example of the daily routine for a resident:

  • Breakfast is served in the dining rooms from 0730
  • Morning tea is served in the dining rooms or on the verandah from 0930
  • During the week there are activities such as the Hur gym wellness programe and craft, shopping, bingo, cooking and games directed to both the body and the mind
  • Lunch, the main meal, is served in the dining rooms from noon
  • Afternoon tea is served at 1430
  • Afternoon social activities
  • The lighter evening meal is served in the dining rooms from 1700
  • Supper is available when required
